March is Social Worker Month

Social Work Breaks Barriers That Prevent People and
Communities from Thriving

Each day social workers help break down barriers that prevent people from living more fulfilling, enriched lives. They work on the individual level, helping people overcome personal crises like food insecurity, lack of affordable housing, or limited access to good health care. They also advocate on a systems level to ensure laws and policies are adopted so everyone can access such services.

Social workers are uniquely qualified to help people in their own environment, by looking at all the aspects of their life and cultures. They work to ensure your personal well-being, to prevent crises, to counsel individuals and families, and to help build strong communities.

Clients and co-workers talk about Erika's impact

Years ago, when I first met Erika, I quickly realized she represents the true grassroots of the discipline. Never would I have thought, when I started working in the field of human services and social work, that I would immediately meet a person who demonstrates the genuine nature of the field – simply a human being helping another human being with dignity and respect.

I always knew I wanted to work towards the greater good and I am grateful for her guidance. Meeting people face-to-face, hearing their story, and executing a plan is where Erika’s compassion manifests a comforting experience. This is her element. Rare and divine in this devotion, it is clear she truly isn’t bound to the margins of the discipline, she practices an art.

Erika is wonderful.  She is very good to me. She listens to me and always manages to address my concerns.  She calls me every month to check on me and helps me with things I need for my son.

Erika's presence is such a blessing at Open Door.  I have seen time and again how clients have walked in nervous or frightened, not sure where they can turn.  The transformation after they meet with her is real.  Whether it's the confidence to move forward, or knowing that someone is finally hearing them, client's leave feeling empowered to face and surmount the issues facing them.

Every time I call Erika, she is always kind and patient.  She has gone out of her way to help.  I rely on her constantly.

Erika, her education, knowledge, and skill sets are a great asset to OD.  She is always willing to help, and reach out to her wealth of contacts to guide clients and friends in need. I have always appreciated her aid n support.  We are lucky to have her at Open Door.
