Why we do it
In 2023, B. P. wrote: "For years I have seen this door and people outside, thinking it was a place that fed people when they were hungry. And yes they do help people when they’re hungry! As a matter of fact they helped me when I was starving. But they do so much more, they rescued me! I had nothing more to give. I didn’t want my son to know the lights would be shut off and he could no longer study for his future. I tried everywhere, but no one could help. Either they didn't answer or there weren't enough funds. But then I found Erika. She didn't judge me, she even helped me find job training. It was the most embarrassing time of my life and she made it seem as if it were just like riding a bike to get the Sunday paper."

One year later: "I’m a licensed Dental Assistant with a Radiology License. I just started out and I don’t work many hours just yet, but with experience the hours will come. I still may not be able to afford life just yet, but thanks to Open Door and Erika, I'm hopeful. Thank you!" B.P.

March is National Social Worker Month
Our Advocacy Program
Social workers excel at meeting people where they are and provide compassionate guidance and help.
Social workers care about people. That is why so many people enter social work each year, making it one of the fastest growing professions in the United States. They go through years of education and training in order to help individuals, families, communities and our society reach their full potential.
This month's theme Compassion + Action also focuses on the need for social workers to take care of themselves. Just as airlines instruct passengers to put on their own oxygen masks before helping others in an emergency, social workers must prioritize compassion for themselves to effectively support those in need.

I have been a client at Open Door for a very long time so I know Erika as long as she has been there. She started helping me personally when I became homebound. Now she calls me every month to see how I am doing, and to arrange for groceries to be delivered. She is such a nice person, very kind and always looking to help in any way.
Never, has there been a person that has met Erika that hasn’t admired her. All of her clients, interns, volunteers, peers and coworkers all respect her. We are all in awe of her work ethic, her professionalism and her caring heart. I am honored to be able to witness the tremendous help that she is able to provide for the community. Open Door is a better place because of her efforts.

Karen is a wonderful addition to the Open Door team. Her desire to assist those in need is greatly appreciated by all.
